It all begins with the board

16 Dec 2025

All corrugated packaging begins with the type of board chosen to manufacture the solution and ensuring the correct board grade and type is chosen is key to the success of the solution.

The board determines the quality, strength, and characteristics of the packaging and without a good quality board the packaging could lack the durability and protective qualities essential for safely transporting and storing goods.

This is why it’s imperative to choose packaging professionals who understand the different board grades, how they perform, their strength, durability and their flexibility and agility when dealing with complex designs.

Corrugated Board grades

There are several different types of corrugated board, each designed to meet specific packaging requirements. The most common varieties include single wall, double wall, and triple wall boards, which refer to the number of fluted layers sandwiched between linerboards. Additionally, the flute profile—such as A, B, C, E, and F flutes—affects the board’s thickness and cushioning properties, allowing manufacturers to tailor packaging for strength, rigidity, or flexibility as needed.

For customers, the different types of corrugated board offer a range of choices that directly impact the performance and suitability of packaging for their specific needs. Single wall boards are generally lightweight and cost-effective, making them ideal for everyday shipping and retail packaging. Double wall boards provide increased strength and protection, which is beneficial for heavier or more fragile items.

The flute profile also plays a significant role: larger flutes (such as A or C) offer superior cushioning and are preferred for delicate products, whereas smaller flutes (like E or F) create a smoother surface for printing and are often chosen for retail packaging where appearance and print quality matter. Understanding these differences enables customers to select packaging that best balances protection, presentation, and cost-efficiency for their products.

How we support customers

Because of our extensive material knowledge, we advise our customers from the very beginning of the order process. For new customers this is imperative to the success of the design we do, however should a customer have an existing design we will check if a different board grade may prove to be more suitable and meet their requirements in a better way.

Our sales team work incredibly closely with our design team, and this collaboration ensures that we create solutions that meet customers needs, often bringing new and exciting ideas to the process as well.

We also support our customers to enjoy the wider benefits of choosing corrugated packaging and how it supports sustainability goals for businesses.
One of the most sustainable packaging materials corrugated is:
• Renewable – Paper is made from renewable raw materials derived from sustainably managed forests
• Bio-degradable – Whilst we encourage recycling through appropriate channels it is completely bio-degradable should it end up in landfill
• Lightweight – This can save on transportation costs, especially when its right-sized design
• Recyclable – There’s not many materials that can claim they are 100%recyclable! And over 80% of cardboard used in the UK is recycled.

Our board supply

As part of the largest independent corrugated packaging group in the UK, Logson Group, we also benefit from having three sheet feeding sites and five corrugators located across the UK.

Board24 is located in Coalville, Preston and Eurocentral (Scotland) and this helps us with our supply chain security and ability to access a wide variety of board grades.
Bob Kozulab, Managing Director, Jardin Corrugated commented; “Being part of a larger group definitely brings advantages from both a board variety, board supply and resilience perspective and customers enjoy the benefits this brings to their own supply chains and operations.

“Customers can be assured that our supply chains couple with the knowledge of our team will ensure that whilst it may begin with the board, we deliver successful packaging outcomes that add value to their businesses.”
